Aliens, Corrupt Government, Indifferent Corporations, Backwater Planets, Unlikely Heroes In the distant future, humans have colonized hundreds of planets and thousands of moons and asteroids. We travel between planets in large numbers and have made advances in all aspects of human achievement. As with the present, the future with all its advancements is not exactly Utopia. Powerful politicians and the extremely rich enjoy benefits on the planets closest to Earth that trillions of people on the outer planets only dream about. Large corporations have replaced nations and control planets and billions of workers. Workers live and work on the same planet and for the same corporations as generations of their ancestors. Generations have lived with no hope of ever having any life other than one of “just getting by”. At least they don't have to worry about other species competing with us. – Well, until now. Join our unlikely band of heroes as they pull together to save the people on outer-rim planets that have been left by an uncaring government and greedy corporations to face the alien invaders as they sweep over planet after planet harvesting everything in their sight. First Contact Spider Wars Book 1 Randy Dyess Books
Aside from some proof-reading errors, First Contact was a solid first sci-fi story from new author Randy Dyess. The pace, particularly after the action in the first couple of chapters, was a little slow as the author iintoduced his main characters. Around the 45% mark, the action ramped up after the alien Spiders invaded one of the Human settled worlds.I would have liked to see some description of how the alien spiders manipulated their technology, as well as a description of what the aliens looked like (other than been told they have eight eyes and several pairs of legs, there is little to go by). In addition, the dialogue between the Spiders was occasionally cheesy whereas the dialogue between the human characters was very good.
Overall, the author delivered a readable story that has some good characters - I particularly liked the Sullivans - Dakota and Owen - and the crew of Sullivans Pride. In fact they were introduced early on and then weren't seen again until near the end of the book and I must confess to feeling mildly disappointed that they didn't have a greater part to play in the story. That been said, going by the blurb for the next book which out in March, it looks like the Sullivans will have a little more to do in the story.....yay!
The setting of the story is also good - large Corporations are in control of Human space and whole generations can end up working for very little cash, with little prospect of moving up the 'ladder' or even off world. The characters manage to convey the sense of dissatisfaction with the various Corporations and their sense of hopelessness through their hopes and dreams of a better life, usually through their desire to live a good life in the core worlds.
In addition, the Navy and Marines, like everything in Dyess' universe, is influenced by the Corporations and you literally have to have money in order to move up in rank. It will certainly be interesting, as the series progresses, to see whether or not Humanity can pull together to face the alien Spiders or whether it ends up facing extinction because of the way their government and economy is organised. Looking forward to reading the next book in series :)
