The same archeological team who uncovered a secret underground bunker on Dakistee sixteen years earlier, when the planet was still named Mawcett, has discovered a new facility. They struggle for months to open the entrance, but the structure defies all their efforts. Finally admitting defeat, they send a message to Admiral Jenetta Carver, beseeching her to come help once again.
In Region Two, Admiral Jenetta Carver is besieged with mundane work.
Although she would love to drop everything and head for Dakistee, she can't possibly get away. But she also can't ignore the possibilities of what treasures, or dangers, the facility might represent. Fortunately, the battleship Hephaestus is in port, and the ship's third watch commander is available for a special assignment.
Christa is far from thrilled with the prospect of giving up her seat on the bridge, even temporarily, but when an admiral says go, you go. It doesn't matter that the admiral is your sister. Christa expects to make a quick trip, with a speedy return to the Hephaestus, but as with Jenetta, assignments often tend to take unexpected side trips into unique and dangerous situations.

Too many times I read a novel and for some reason the author felt it was necessary to instill “real life” into the story and end it in a “bittersweet” way. Ie: the main character lives, falls in love, gets the money etc but the beloved “sidekick” dies horribly. WHAT THE HECK??? I read to get away from reality. And all these GU novels have been what I would call “perfect”!! Now I know you have to do it too, sooner or later, but I just want to say, mr. DePrima, thank you. Every book has ended with me smiling from ear to ear.Product details

Return to Dakistee A Galaxy Unknown Book 8 eBook Thomas DePrima Reviews
I strongly suggest you read the previous books in the series (A Galaxy Unknown, Valor At Vauzlee, The Clones of Mawcett, Trader Vyx, Milor!, Castle Vroman and Against All Odds) prior to reading this installment.
The plot thickens and now it's Christa's turn! What a great read this was. This installment was a phenomenal high adventure story full of plenty of twist and turns. Although, this installment didn't have as much action as the previous books, it was no less exciting.
The entertainment factor was so high, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was so entirely engrossed in the story; I was actually upset when the ending finally came. I felt like I wanted this story to go on and on, I am so glad the author decided to continue this series. In truth, I can't imagine not reading about the Carver sisters' exploits.
This author is so talented and he never fails to grab my attention and keep it. This story was so fabulous, I was glued to every page, especially the parts concerning the ancients, I felt like I was watching one of my favorite Stargate episodes (take your pick from the Stargate trio).
A side note, this vibrant and intriguing cover is the best of the entire series!
To those fellow dark urban fantasy readers, looking for a good SF but don't want to end up with space romance; I highly recommend this book to you, as the style of writing is similar to a urban fantasy read.
I highly recommend this book to fellow SF fans and also look forward to reading the next book in the series and also the AGU spin-off series Border Patrol, Citizen X due out in 2012.
I also recommend
The Hour of Dust and Ashes (Charlie Madigan, Book 3)
Kissed by Darkness (Sunwalker Saga)
The Renfield Syndrome (Rhiannon's Law, Book Two)
The Shadow Reader (A Shadow Reader Novel)
Song of Scarabaeus
While I can't say this is the best - or the worst - of the books about the Carver sisters it is indeed equal to the others, just different in that the main storyline is about Christa. And let's be honest, while the major emphasis in the first seven books is the Admiral herself, Christa is the star of this book, and I'm sure Eliza will have a book of her own soon.
The series has become one of my favorites, and I have read it thru for the second time (just finished, in fact, hoping #9 would be out by now, but alas, it isn't). I'll have to admit it is similar in scope to the Honor Harrington series, but different, and, I think better. Mr. dePrima doesn't waste a lot of pages on battles or back stories that we don't really need, but he does have great character and story development. The length of the books is just right, in my opinion.
I would hope that anyone deciding to read any of these books will start with #1 and go from there. It is well worth it, and if this is your type of genre, you will wind up reading all of them and waiting, as most of us are, for more. (And unlike the HH series and most others, the title of each book also gives it's number in the series which is a real convenience).
I would also like to add what a pleasure it is to read a series like this that has so few curse words and, if memory serves, not one use of the "f" word. It just shows that a really good author does not need the crutch of expletives.
I'll give this book 4 stars. No massive space battles. Some intrigue. Some interesting situations. We finally get to spend a book following Christa Carter rather than Jenetta Carter. The story was decent, though not amazing.
I would say that Mr. DePrima's writing skill has now improved to the C+ level. He has learned to correct almost all the serious errors, which were nearly omnipresent in his early books in the series, though he still doesn't really understand Military or Intelligence services.
His characterization is marginally improved, if at all. Still not much characterization anywhere in his books, but perhaps it is slightly better since the lack of characterization didn't seem so apparent in this story. He could improve his characterization immediately by dropping the god-like omniscient POV and switching to a more limited 1st person POV. Then a few details added to show the real thoughts and motivations of people and his characters would come to life much more fully. Oh well, he is still improving, so we can hope.
If you like this series, you will undoubtedly like this book. But do start at the beginning of the series and work your way up.
Too many times I read a novel and for some reason the author felt it was necessary to instill “real life” into the story and end it in a “bittersweet” way. Ie the main character lives, falls in love, gets the money etc but the beloved “sidekick” dies horribly. WHAT THE HECK??? I read to get away from reality. And all these GU novels have been what I would call “perfect”!! Now I know you have to do it too, sooner or later, but I just want to say, mr. DePrima, thank you.
